Training
How to Teach Meditation: A Guide for Yoga Teachers
Many yoga teachers are asked to lead meditation long before anyone has taught them how. This guide draws on the teaching of Carla Gonçalves at BeYoga School. It explains what meditation is and what research really shows. It also covers the main techniques and why guiding others is a skill worth learning properly.By Carla Gonçalves · 8 min read

47clinical trials in the review by Goyal et al. (2014)

8guided meditations in the course

10hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education

Quick answer: To teach meditation, a yoga teacher needs a regular personal practice and a clear grasp of the main techniques and of what research does and does not show. Guiding is the other half: choosing the right practice for a group, adapting it for beginners, offering choice and knowing when to refer someone to a healthcare professional.

Foundations
What meditation is and where it comes from

Meditation is an ancient practice of training the mind towards greater concentration and calm. Mindfulness, full attention to the present moment without judgement, is its most widely studied expression today. Neither asks you to empty your head. Both ask only for presence.

The earliest recorded techniques, called dhyāna, appear in the ascetic circles of India around the 6th to 5th centuries BCE (Samuel, 2008). The older Vedas already speak of contemplation, but not yet of techniques (Mallinson & Singleton, 2017). Early Buddhist texts ask for serenity (samatha) and insight (vipassanā) to be cultivated together (Sujato, n.d.). China has its own early text on breath meditation, the Neiye (Roth, 1999), and Christianity and Islam developed practices that join prayer or repetition to breath and posture (Britannica Editors, n.d.-b, n.d.-c).

For yoga teachers, the key reference is Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, which define yoga as the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind (1.2). In the eight limbs, concentration (dhāraṇā) prepares meditation (dhyāna), and absorption (samādhi) is its fruit (Bryant, 2009). Mindfulness took a different route: in the 1970s Jon Kabat-Zinn adapted vipassanā to create MBSR, a secular programme for reducing stress (Kabat-Zinn, 1990).

Meditation. The broader concept: training the mind in many forms, whether seated, guided, with a mantra or in movement.

Mindfulness. A specific approach within meditation: non-judgemental attention to the present, carried off the cushion into everyday activities such as eating or listening.

Key takeaway
Meditation has a long spiritual history; mindfulness is a modern, secular approach built on it. Both share the same essence: attention to the present moment.

Evidence
What research shows, and what it does not

Meditation is widely studied, but many studies are still small or short. A good teacher speaks with the same care the research demands: may, is associated with, some studies suggest.

The broad picture is encouraging but modest. A review of 47 clinical trials with 3,515 participants found that mindfulness meditation programmes produce small to moderate reductions in anxiety, depression and pain. They did not prove better than other active treatments such as medication or exercise (Goyal et al., 2014). Later reviews reach a similar conclusion (Goldberg et al., 2018, 2022; Galante et al., 2021).

Some popular claims rest on thin ground. A small study of 16 people after eight weeks of MBSR observed greater grey matter density in the hippocampus (Hölzel et al., 2011), but a larger trial with 218 people did not find these changes (Kral et al., 2022). Results on the immune system are still considered provisional (Black & Slavich, 2016).

Recurrent depression. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy reduces the risk of relapse and appears as effective as maintenance antidepressants (Kuyken et al., 2015, 2016). Stopping antidepressants after MBCT increased relapses (Huijbers et al., 2016), so any change in medication is decided with the doctor.

Sleep. In 49 older adults with sleep disturbances, six weeks of mindfulness improved sleep more than a sleep hygiene programme (Black et al., 2015).

Length of practice. In beginners, 5-minute practices were at least as useful as 20-minute ones (Strohmaier et al., 2021). Consistency counts more than duration.

Difficult experiences. Practice can at times bring up anxiety, sadness or unusual sensations (Farias et al., 2020). Teachers need to know this is possible.

Key takeaway
Meditation is a wellbeing practice, not a treatment, and it never replaces medical or psychological care. The honest message for students is that its benefits are real but modest, and similar to those of other active approaches.

Seated meditation outdoors.

Techniques
The main meditation techniques taught in the course

There is no single correct way to meditate. The course organises the practices into four paths: active, passive, meditation as a discipline and mindfulness in daily life. The aim is to help each student find a way in that suits their personality and routine. These are the techniques it covers, named here with their purpose only.

Alternate nostril breathing (nāḍī śodhana) is covered in full in the Pranayama and Breathwork Teacher Training. For an overview of breathing practices, see our guide to pranayama techniques.

Guided meditation. A voice leads the mind through images and suggestions; the easiest way in for beginners.

Mindfulness meditation. Observing the thoughts, emotions and sensations of the present moment without judgement.

Concentration meditation. Resting attention on a single point, such as the breath or a sound.

Mantra meditation. Traditions such as Transcendental Meditation and japa use a repeated sound to quieten the mind.

Vipassanā and mettā. Observing reality as it is, and sending compassionate thoughts to oneself and others.

Walking meditation. Mindful movement for students who feel restless when seated.

Conscious breathing. The breath as an anchor; slow breathing is associated with greater parasympathetic activity and less anxiety (Zaccaro et al., 2018).

Candle meditation (trāṭaka). A concentration practice using a flame as the fixation point, described in the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā (Svātmārāma, n.d.).

Chocolate meditation. Mindful tasting adapted from the raisin exercise of the MBSR programme (Kabat-Zinn, 1990).

Key takeaway
Matching the technique to the person matters as much as the technique itself.

Guiding
Why guiding meditation is a skill of its own

Many teachers search for a guided meditation script and hope it will be enough. A script gives you words, but it cannot read a room. Guiding means holding a group’s attention with your voice and pacing the silence, while staying responsive to what is happening in front of you.

Beginners often arrive with a myth: that meditating means having an empty mind. When thoughts keep coming, they assume they are doing it wrong. Part of the teacher’s role is to normalise the wandering mind. As the manual puts it, the aim is not to eliminate thoughts but to observe them without identifying with them.

Safety is part of guiding. Students should know that difficult experiences may arise and that they can stop at any moment (Farias et al., 2020). Anyone with a history of psychotic or bipolar disorder, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, trauma or epilepsy should practise under the guidance of their doctor or psychologist (Lustyk et al., 2009). Trauma-sensitive teaching rests on always offering choice (Treleaven, 2018).

If you already lead relaxation, our guide to guiding Yoga Nidra shows how much the guide’s presence shapes the experience. Meditation asks for the same care.

Your own practice. Anyone guiding others should keep a regular personal practice and know the limits of their role (Crane et al., 2012).

Choosing for the group. A restless group and a group seeking deep rest may need different paths, and the teacher decides which.

Knowing when to refer. Teachers are not therapists. Recognising when someone needs a healthcare professional is part of the skill.

Guiding a group in a quiet room.

The course
What you learn in the course

The course is built from the teaching of Carla Gonçalves, with a video lesson in each unit. Anyone guiding others should keep a regular personal practice, know the limits of their role and know when to refer to a healthcare professional (Crane et al., 2012). Your own experience of a restless mind is what lets you recognise it in students and respond with patience rather than correction.

</details><details class="by-faq">
Can I do meditation teacher training online?

Yes. BeYoga’s Meditation Teacher Training is online and self-paced, with 10 hours of content in English, a video in each unit, eight guided meditations, an interactive manual and a PDF workbook. After passing the final exam with 80% or more, you receive a certificate counting as 10 hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education from a YACEP.

</details><details class="by-faq">
Is a guided meditation script enough to lead a class?

A script can help you begin, but it cannot choose the right practice for a group or adjust to beginners. Nor can it respond to someone having a difficult experience. Those decisions are the real skill of guiding. The course includes eight complete guided meditations and teaches how to guide each technique, which is why this article does not offer a script.

</details><details class="by-faq">
How long should a meditation be for beginners?

Short practices work. In one experiment with beginners, 5-minute practices were at least as useful as 20-minute ones (Strohmaier et al., 2021), and a review of 203 trials found no advantage in larger doses (Strohmaier, 2020). The manual suggests starting with 5 to 10 minutes, without pressure. Consistency matters more than length.

</details><details class="by-faq">
Is meditation safe for everyone?

It is safe for most people, but practice can at times bring up anxiety, sadness or unusual sensations (Farias et al., 2020). People with a history of psychotic or bipolar disorder, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, trauma or epilepsy should practise under the guidance of their doctor or psychologist (Lustyk et al., 2009). Meditation never replaces medical or psychological care.

</details><details class="by-faq">
What is the difference between meditation and mindfulness?

Meditation is the broader concept: training the mind in many forms, including guided, mantra, concentration and movement-based practices. Mindfulness is one approach within it: observing thoughts, emotions and sensations without judgement. It derives from Buddhist vipassanā and was adapted by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the 1970s into MBSR, a secular stress reduction programme (Kabat-Zinn, 1990).

</details>

Learn to teach it
Meditation Teacher Training

Online, 10 hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education and eight guided meditations.

See the courseView all courses

<details class="by-faq">
Sources cited in this article

Britannica Editors. Anyone guiding others should keep a regular personal practice, know the limits of their role and know when to refer to a healthcare professional (Crane et al., 2012). Your own experience of a restless mind is what lets you recognise it in students and respond with patience rather than correction."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Can I do meditation teacher training online?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes. BeYoga's Meditation Teacher Training is online and self-paced, with 10 hours of content in English, a video in each unit, eight guided meditations, an interactive manual and a PDF workbook. After passing the final exam with 80% or more, you receive a certificate counting as 10 hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education from a YACEP."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Is a guided meditation script enough to lead a class?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "A script can help you begin, but it cannot choose the right practice for a group or adjust to beginners. Nor can it respond to someone having a difficult experience. Those decisions are the real skill of guiding. The course includes eight complete guided meditations and teaches how to guide each technique, which is why this article does not offer a script."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "How long should a meditation be for beginners?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Short practices work. In one experiment with beginners, 5-minute practices were at least as useful as 20-minute ones (Strohmaier et al., 2021), and a review of 203 trials found no advantage in larger doses (Strohmaier, 2020). Mindfulness is one approach within it: observing thoughts, emotions and sensations without judgement.
