When choosing a yoga teacher training in Portugal, one of the most important criteria is the school’s certification. Yoga Alliance Yoga Alliance is the international benchmark — and understanding what it means to be an RYS-certified school makes all the difference in your choice.

What is Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Alliance is the largest international accreditation body for yoga schools and teachers, founded in 1999 in the United States. It sets global curriculum standards for teacher trainings and certifies schools (RYS) and teachers (RYT) that meet them.
A certificate issued by a Yoga Alliance-accredited school is recognised in every country in the world — whether Brazil, the UK, Australia or Japan. It’s the international passport of the yoga teacher.

RYS vs. RYT: what’s the difference?
RYS (Registered Yoga School) is the status granted to schools that meet Yoga Alliance’s curriculum standards. BeYoga is an RYS 200 and RYS 300 school.
RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) is the title given to teachers who complete a training at an RYS school and register individually with Yoga Alliance. There are two main levels:

Earned after completing 200 hours of certified training. The foundational level for teaching yoga professionally.

RYT 500
Earned after completing 500 hours of training (200h + 300h advanced) and a minimum of 100 documented teaching hours. The most advanced certification level.
How does Yoga Alliance registration work after the training?
After completing the 200h training at BeYoga, you receive your certificate of completion and a registration code. With that code:
- Go to the Yoga Alliance website (yogaalliance.org) and create a personal account.
- Link your profile to BeYoga School using the code provided.
- Pay the annual registration fee directly to Yoga Alliance (approximately US$115/year).
- Receive RYT 200 status and access to the global directory of certified teachers.

What are DGERT and IPDJ accreditations?
A DGERT (the Portuguese Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations) certifies training providers in Portugal, allowing them to issue certificates recognised by the Ministry of Labour and access IEFP support. The IPDJ (the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth) specifically certifies the sports component, such as yoga. BeYoga holds both national accreditations.
Is the BeYoga certificate valid outside Portugal?
Yes. As a Yoga Alliance-accredited school (RYS 200 and RYS 300), the certificate issued by BeYoga is internationally recognised. Registered as an RYT with Yoga Alliance, you can teach yoga in any country in the world.
What’s the difference between RYT 200 and RYT 500?
O RYT 200 is the foundational certification level — earned after 200 hours of certified training. The RYT 500 is the advanced level, requiring 500 hours of training (200h + 300h advanced) and at least 100 documented teaching hours. There’s also E-RYT (Experienced), for teachers with over 1,000 registered teaching hours.
How do I register as RYT 200 after completing the BeYoga training?
After finishing the training, you receive your certificate of completion and a registration code. With it, you go to the Yoga Alliance website, create an account and register as RYT 200. The registration fee is paid directly to Yoga Alliance (approximately US$115 per year). BeYoga supports you through the process.
