It’s one of the most common questions for anyone considering a yoga teacher training: is it better to do it in person or online? The honest answer is: it depends. It depends on what you value, your life situation, what you expect from the training, and where you want to go afterwards.

This article won’t argue for either option. It will lay out the real differences, without the marketing, so you can make an informed decision.

What defines a good Yoga teacher training?

Before comparing formats, it helps to understand what makes a training a quality one, whether in person or online — we gathered the 7 objective criteria for comparing Yoga teacher trainings in a dedicated guide. A good training should cover anatomy and physiology applied to yoga, philosophy and history, teaching methodology, asana technique and hands-on adjustments, pranayama and meditation, and supervised teaching practice with real feedback.

This content can be delivered in different formats. Some elements, however, are significantly harder to replicate online.

In-person training: what you gain and what you lose

What physical presence makes possible

In yoga, the body is the instrument. Learning to guide a class, give hands-on adjustments, read a student’s body and correct alignment in real time: all of that requires physical presence. In an in-person training, you get to receive direct feedback from your trainer on your practice, learn adjustments with your hands, share the space with peers you form real bonds with, and feel the group dynamic that will later be your main resource as a teacher.

The community that forms in an in-person training has a value that’s hard to quantify, but that our trainees consistently describe as one of the most transformative parts of the experience. Growing with a group of people over several months, sharing doubts and discoveries, seeing each person’s evolution: it creates bonds and a support network that lasts beyond the training.

“What I learned in the breaks, in the lunchtime conversations, in the moments of shared doubt with my classmates — that’s the knowledge no video could ever have given me.”

The limitations of in-person

In-person training requires you to be physically available on set days and times. That can be an obstacle for those with inflexible work or family commitments, for those who live far from the training venue, or for those who can’t commit weekends over several months.

Online training: what you gain and what you lose

Real flexibility

The main advantage of an online training is flexibility. You can access the content at your own pace, any time, from anywhere. If you have an intense professional life, children, or live in a city with no quality trainings on offer, online may be the only viable option — or simply the one that makes the most sense for your situation.

What’s hard to replicate online

Hands-on adjustments don’t exist in an online format. The feedback on your physical practice is limited to what a camera can capture, which leaves out much of what an experienced trainer observes in person. The group dynamic is different: you can create community online, but it’s a community of a different nature from the one that forms when you share the same space for months.

There’s also a risk of superficiality. Online 200h trainings completed in a few weeks raise serious questions about the depth of learning, especially in the practical and pedagogical components.

In-person or online: a comparative look

🏛️

In person

Hands-on adjustments, real-time feedback, genuine group dynamic. Requires regular physical availability. Ideal for those who want to teach professionally.

💻

Online

Full flexibility of schedule and location. No physical adjustments. Useful for those who want to deepen their personal practice and have geographic or scheduling constraints.

Intensive (in person)

A concentrated immersion over 4 to 8 weeks. Transformative and demanding. For those who have that window of time available.

📅

Progressive (weekends)

8 to 10 months of intensive weekends. Fits around your professional life. The dominant format among leading schools in Portugal.

Good to know

If your goal is to teach yoga professionally, real-time feedback, physical adjustments and supervised teaching practice carry enormous weight in the quality of your training. These elements are best gained in person. Always ask whether the online option includes live sessions, individual feedback and supervised practical components.

At BeYoga School, the 200h teacher training is in person, by deliberate choice. We believe that yoga, as a physical and philosophical practice, is best learned in community and in presence. The modules take place at weekends, in an intensive format, so that professionals with busy lives can attend without giving up their weeks.

The most common questions about training formats

Is an online yoga training worth the same as an in-person one?

It depends a lot on the school, the programme and the trainee’s goals. For theoretical and philosophical components, online can be equally effective. For practical components (hands-on adjustments, asana feedback, teaching dynamics), physical presence has significant advantages. From the point of view of the formal job market in Portugal, what matters is whether the training body has DGERT certification, regardless of format.

How long does a yoga teacher training last?

The market’s reference training is the 200-hour one (RYT-200, in Yoga Alliance terminology). In an intensive in-person weekend format, like BeYoga School’s, it can be completed in about 9 to 12 months. In an online format, the duration varies widely. Trainings that promise to complete 200h in a few weeks deserve scrutiny about the quality and depth of the learning.

Do I need prior yoga experience to enrol?

Most schools recommend at least 1 to 2 years of regular practice before a teacher training. Not as a rigid requirement, but because the training will be far richer if you already have an established relationship with your own practice. Without a personal foundation, it’s hard to integrate and transmit what you learn.

Does the BeYoga training have an online option?

No. The BeYoga 200h training is exclusively in person, a deliberate choice grounded in the conviction that physical presence is essential to the quality of learning in yoga. The modules take place at weekends, in an intensive format, so that those with a busy professional life can attend without giving up their working weeks.
