Who can become a Yoga teacher?

The decision to become a Yoga teacher almost always begins with personal practice. You don’t need to be an athlete, or to have tried dozens of different styles. What counts is having a genuine relationship with Yoga, and the wish to deepen it to a point where you can guide others.

In Portugal, there is no mandatory register of Yoga teachers managed by a public body. Technically, anyone can declare that they teach. What sets a serious teacher apart from someone without training is precisely the path they took, the certifications they obtained, and the quality of the school that trained them.

Good to know

There is no single path to becoming a Yoga teacher, but there is an international standard the market recognises: the 200h YTT training certified by Yoga Alliance, ideally at a school also recognised in Portugal by DGERT and IPDJ.

The 200h training: the recognised starting point

The 200h Yoga teacher training is the entry standard for the profession. It’s internationally recognised by Yoga Alliance as RYT 200 and is the minimum curriculum accepted by the vast majority of studios, gyms and Yoga platforms worldwide.

In Portugal, the best schools complement this international certification with national recognition by DGERT (the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations) and IPDJ (the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth). This means your training is valid both for teaching in Portugal and abroad.

1The curriculum

What you learn in a 200h training

Anatomy and physiology applied to Yoga, philosophy and history, asana technique with alignment and adjustments, pranayama, meditation, class sequencing, pedagogy and space management, professional ethics. It’s 200 hours of structured training that cover Yoga as a complete system, not just as a physical practice.

2The duration

How long it takes

The most common format in Portugal is the progressive one, with weekend modules over 8 to 10 months. There are also intensive formats of 4 to 6 weeks and live online options that let you combine the training with a professional life. The duration in months varies, but the number of hours is always the same: 200h of contact and study.

3What comes next

300h, 500h and beyond

Those who complete the 200h can continue to an advanced 300h training, reaching 500h in total, recognised by Yoga Alliance as the most complete level of training. From there, paths open up to specialisations, trainings in specific styles and progression to E-RYT 500 status.

Certifications that recognise your training

In the Portuguese context, there are three certifications worth understanding before choosing a school.

Yoga Alliance

The American organisation is the worldwide reference standard for Yoga teacher trainings. Schools accredited as an RYS 200 can issue diplomas recognised in any country. Individual registration as RYT 200 is paid directly to the organisation (~115 USD/year) and opens access to a global network of certified teachers.

DGERT

The Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations certifies training providers in Portugal. A school with DGERT certification meets the legal quality requirements set by the Portuguese state for professional training. It’s the certification relevant for tax and professional purposes in Portugal.

IPDJ

The Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth has recognised Yoga as a sporting activity since 2021. Recognition by IPDJ confers additional legitimacy to the practice and the training, especially in contexts linked to health, wellbeing and sport.

The best schools in Portugal have all three certifications. You don’t have to choose between national and international recognition. A training that combines DGERT, IPDJ and Yoga Alliance covers every context in which you might come to teach.

What sets a good training school apart

With the proliferation of trainings available online and in person, the choice can seem difficult. But there are objective criteria that make the decision easier.

📜

Verifiable certifications

Confirm that the school is listed with Yoga Alliance as an RYS and that its DGERT certification is active. Public information, verifiable in minutes.

👩🏫

Trainers with a real track record

The trainers’ background makes a difference. Look for teachers with proven teaching experience, E-RYT status and, ideally, specialisation in the areas that interest you.

🤝

Support throughout the training

A good training isn’t just hours of content. It’s also individual feedback, support for the learning process and follow-up after it ends.

🌐

An active community

The community that forms during the training has real value. A school with active cohorts, events and a connection to the Yoga world is an asset that lasts beyond the diploma.

What you can do after you qualify

A Yoga teacher diploma opens more doors than most candidates imagine. You can teach in a studio, create your own project, work in a corporate setting, organise retreats or deepen your personal practice without ever teaching. The training becomes a profession for those who want it. For those who don’t, it’s one of the most complete experiences of personal development there is.

Questions about how to become a Yoga teacher

Do you need many years of practice to become a Yoga teacher?

There is no minimum number of years of practice required by law or by the main certification organisations. What matters is having a consistent practice and a genuine relationship with Yoga. Most leading schools recommend at least one to two years of regular practice before starting a teacher training.

What’s the difference between a certified and a non-certified Yoga teacher?

In Portugal, there’s no mandatory public register. Anyone can declare that they teach Yoga. The difference between a certified and a non-certified teacher is the structured training they received, the certifications they obtained (such as Yoga Alliance, DGERT and IPDJ) and the pedagogical and safety responsibility that implies.

How long does a Yoga teacher training take in Portugal?

The most common format is the progressive one, with weekend modules over 8 to 10 months. There are also intensive formats of 4 to 6 weeks and live online trainings with more flexible schedules. In all cases, the training includes 200 hours of contact and study.

Can I teach Yoga while I’m still in training?

It depends on the school and the context. During the training, most students start practising teaching in informal settings, such as groups of friends or supervised trial classes. Teaching paid classes before completing the training is possible in some contexts, but it’s not the path recommended by leading schools.

Is online Yoga teacher training worth the same as in-person?

It depends on the school. The online format can have exactly the same curriculum, the same trainers and the same support as an in-person cohort. What’s important to check is whether it includes live sessions with individual feedback and supervised practical components. Without that, the certificate may be the same on paper, but the training isn’t equivalent.

How do I choose the best Yoga teacher training school in Portugal?

Check the school’s certifications (RYS 200 with Yoga Alliance, DGERT, IPDJ), the trainers’ curriculum and experience, the format and the support during the training, and the community the school keeps active. Talk to former students if you can. A good school has real testimonials and verifiable results.

After the 200h, can I continue training?

Yes. The 200h training is the entry point. Those who want to go deeper can continue to the advanced 300h training, thereby completing the 500h total recognised by Yoga Alliance as the most complete level of training for teachers. From there, paths open up to specialisations in areas such as restorative Yoga, prenatal, therapeutic Yoga and much more.
